BIOGRAPHY Emma Yun-Chieh Hsieh was born and raised in Taiwan, where she first began playing piano at the age of six and clarinet at the age of twelve. Emma has finished her bachelor’s degree in clarinet performance at the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) in 2014 under the tutelage of professor Kenneth Grant. She also studied piano under professor Vicent Lenti. She was the winner of the 2007 Taiwan National Student Music Competition, after three years she placed first on the Taiwan college entrance examination and accepted by Eastman School of Music, Oberlin Observatory, and others. She also appears as a soloist and a concertmaster in several orchestras, including Yonghe Youth Orchestra, Yonghe Wind Ensemble, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, CHJH Philharmonic, HTSH Philharmonic, Eastman Philharmonic, Eastman Wind Ensemble, Rochester Chamber Orchestra, and Pittsford Orchestra. Emma got her Performance Certificate from Eastman in April 2013. Emma also plays a diverse variety of musical genres. She had taken jazz courses at Eastman as a pianist and also appears as a keyboardist, clarinetist, and percussionist in different bands whose styles range from progressive rock, to post-rock, pagode, bossa nova, and fusion jazz. She was also active in Mbira Ensemble, a traditional music of Zimbabwe. She was the member of Indian Percussion Ensemble and Gamelan Lila Muni in 2010–2011.
