01. BIOGRAPHY

Emma Yun-Chieh Hsieh was born and raised in Tai­wan, where she first began play­ing piano at the age of six and clar­inet at the age of twelve. Emma has fin­ished her bach­e­lor’s degree in clar­inet per­for­mance at the East­man School of Music (Rochester, NY) in 2014 under the tute­lage of pro­fes­sor Ken­neth Grant. She also stud­ied piano under pro­fes­sor Vicent Lenti. She was the win­ner of the 2007 Tai­wan Nation­al Stu­dent Music Com­pe­ti­tion, after three years she placed first on the Tai­wan col­lege entrance exam­i­na­tion and accept­ed by East­man School of Music, Ober­lin Obser­va­to­ry, and oth­ers. She also appears as a soloist and a con­cert­mas­ter in sev­er­al orches­tras, includ­ing Yonghe Youth Orches­tra, Yonghe Wind Ensem­ble, Nation­al Tai­wan Sym­pho­ny Orches­tra, CHJH Phil­har­mon­ic, HTSH Phil­har­mon­ic, East­man Phil­har­mon­ic, East­man Wind Ensem­ble, Rochester Cham­ber Orches­tra, and Pitts­ford Orches­tra. Emma got her Per­for­mance Cer­tifi­cate from East­man in April 2013. 

Emma also plays a diverse vari­ety of musi­cal gen­res. She had tak­en jazz cours­es at East­man as a pianist and also appears as a key­boardist, clar­inetist, and per­cus­sion­ist in dif­fer­ent bands whose styles range from pro­gres­sive rock, to post-rock, pagode, bossa nova, and fusion jazz. She was also active in Mbi­ra Ensem­ble, a tra­di­tion­al music of Zim­bab­we. She was the mem­ber of Indi­an Per­cus­sion Ensem­ble and Game­lan Lila Muni in 2010–2011.
